Standing tall, taking a deep breath, and being generally proud of one's own behavior and stature are a very pleasing and comforting trait to have. To smile about who you are, what you've done, and what you're capable of doing is no small feat, however. Building self confidence is an important part of any person's life, and it means becoming a generally stronger and more mature person. There are many reasons someone might want to build self confidence, such as wanting to shake that timid feeling, or perhaps just to be a generally better person and feel more capable of one.
Poor self esteem is more than just a personal issue for many people. Having poor self esteem is a very detrimental condition, as it prevents someone from taking as many risks as he or she should, which, in turn, can lead to lost opportunities and overall sense of stagnation. A person like this is typically heavily interested in building self confidence, but doesn't always know where or how to begin. It's really a vicious cycle because even if a person does have a few ideas on building self confidence, if they have low self esteem the individual is usually plagued with thoughts along the lines of "...but it'll never work for me."
The solution to this problem for most people is to start very small. Begin building self confidence by smiling more often. Smiling, even if it's forced, sets off emotional flags in the body and the more of those tiny flags that get set off will help in building self confidence. People around someone who smiles a lot tend to take on a lighter mood and react well to that person. If a smile is a character trait for someone, others are more likely to be amiable with him or her. A tougher element, but a necessary one for building self confidence, is to learn to shrug of criticism that doesn't matter. People naturally want to be liked and feel needed, and some individuals find one way of helping themselves feel better about them is to put down those around them. Rather than climbing to the top by their own merits, they seek to push everyone else down. If that sounds like a pathetic way to manage yourself, that's because it is, and you should not pay attention to these people.
